    Why Snowboard Gulmarg?

Gulmarg has become a bucket-list destination for snowboarders worldwide. The combination of bottomless Himalayan powder, vast untracked terrain, and unique cultural experience makes it unlike anywhere else on earth.

Unlike traditional resorts, Gulmarg offers primarily off-piste riding. From the moment you step off the gondola at Apharwat, you're in backcountry terrain — wide open bowls, steep faces, pillow lines, and tree runs stretching as far as you can see.

    Terrain Types

    Powder Bowls

Wide open bowls with spectacular views of Kashmir Valley and Nanga Parbat. Perfect for intermediate and advanced riders.

    Steep Alpine Runs

Challenging descents from Apharwat Peak with consistent pitch and deep snow.

    Pillow Lines

Natural snow pillows formed on rocks and terrain features — a playground for technical riders.

    Couloirs

Narrow chutes for expert riders looking for steep, technical challenges.

    Tree Runs

Excellent tree snowboarding in Baba Reshi, Monkey Hill, and Tangmarg forests — rideable even in bad weather.

    Access & Lifts

The Gulmarg Gondola provides access to all snowboarding terrain. The two-stage system takes you from the village (2,650m) to Apharwat Peak shoulder (3,980m).

Note for Snowboarders: The bunny slopes have button lifts designed for skiers. Snowboarders typically need to hike up or hire a porter to carry their board. It's good cardio and a small price to pay for the terrain above!

    Best Conditions

The snowboarding season runs from November to late March. For the best powder conditions, aim for late January to mid-March when the snowpack is deepest and conditions are most consistent.

One of Gulmarg's unique advantages: you can ride the slopes every day even when storms prevent the lifts from operating. The tree runs in the forests below provide excellent riding in all weather conditions.

    For Beginners

If you're new to snowboarding, Gulmarg can still work for you. The meadows at the base offer gentle slopes perfect for learning, and several operators offer beginner snowboard lessons with experienced instructors.

That said, intermediate to expert riders will get the most out of Gulmarg. If you're a true beginner, consider taking a 7-day course to build skills before venturing onto the upper mountain terrain.

    Equipment Rental

Snowboard equipment is available for rent from various shops around Gulmarg. Private rental shops generally have better selection and newer gear than the government shop.

    • Board + Boots: ₹1,000-2,500/day depending on quality
    • Splitboard rental: Available for backcountry touring
    • Avalanche gear: Provided by guides (beacon, probe, shovel)

    Safety & Guides

    Avalanche Awareness

The mountains above Gulmarg are highly avalanche-prone. Outside the marked resort boundaries, there is no avalanche mitigation and any rescue must come from your own group. Hiring an experienced local guide is strongly recommended for all off-piste riding.

Guides provide avalanche safety equipment, route knowledge, and can help you find the best untracked powder. They also know the terrain intimately — where it's safe to ride and where to avoid.
