Baba Reshi Shrine
Ziyarat of Baba Payam ud-Din Reshi — a revered 15th-century Sufi saint's tomb near Tangmarg, blending Mughal and Persian architecture
Baba Reshi (born Payam ud-Din, c. 1411–1480) was a revered 15th-century Sufi saint from Kashmir. Born in Chander-nau-gaon near Ganderbal, he was the son of a nobleman serving in the court of Sultan Zain-ul-Abidin. Initially living a life of luxury, Baba Reshi experienced a profound spiritual awakening after observing ants diligently gathering food for winter — prompting him to contemplate the transient nature of worldly possessions.
Motivated by this reflection, he renounced his wealth and status, seeking guidance from Nund Rishi. He was sent to train with Baba Shukur-ud-Din Wali, where he carried water from Wular Lake to the top of Sharikot Hill for two years. After further training with Sakhi Zain al-Din Wali in Aishmuquam, he was directed to Ramboh village in Baramulla district, where he dedicated himself to prayer and meditation.
The Ziyarat Baba Reshi shrine is a three-storey monument built in 1480 in Mughal and Persian style. Situated at an altitude of about 7,000 feet (2,100 metres), it houses the Noor Khwan — where the grave of the saint lies, covered with cloth bearing Quran embroideries, made of glass and intricate wood carvings.
