Alpather Lake
A stunning glacial lake at 4,390m, frozen for most of the year, lying at the foothills of the twin Apharwat Peaks
Alpather Lake, locally known as the Frozen Lake, is a small yet breathtakingly scenic alpine lake situated at the foothills of the twin Apharwat Peaks. At an altitude of 4,390 metres (14,400 feet), the lake remains frozen for more than half the year, presenting visitors with an ethereal snow-covered landscape in winter and enchanting emerald waters surrounded by wildflowers in summer.
The lake can only be reached by trek from Gulmarg or via the Gondola Phase 2 station. As an offbeat destination visited by relatively few people, Alpather Lake offers unparalleled serenity. The journey itself — through rocky terrain in summer or pristine snowscapes in winter — is an experience of a lifetime, with panoramic views of the Himalayan range including the distant Nanga Parbat.
Is Alpather Lake Trek Difficult?
A moderate trek requiring reasonable fitness, with conditions varying by season
Moderate Difficulty
Requires reasonable physical fitness
The trek to Alpather Lake is ranked as moderate. Most of the route is steep and strewn with boulders. In winter, the snow-covered path makes it easy to get out of breath while climbing uphill. The first stretch — climbing towards the rocky peak visible from the Gondola station — is typically the hardest part. After that, the terrain becomes more manageable as you continue gaining altitude towards the vantage point overlooking the lake.
Winter Trek
A guide is mandatory. There are no trail markings, and the snow makes it easy to lose direction. Guides help navigate safely, assist in tricky sections, and know how to handle emergencies like stepping into soft snow. As this is a border area, extra caution is required.
Summer Trek
A guide is optional but recommended for first-time visitors, casual trekkers unfamiliar with the terrain, or those with limited time. Even in July, parts of the path near the lake may still have slippery snow patches requiring assistance.
